Every hour spent watching television increases the risk of premature death from all causes, a new study says.
Couch potatoes are more likely to die prematurely than people who watch only a moderate amount of television, according to the research.
But the risk can be reduced by taking part in "non-sweaty" activities like standing up to change channels.
The study, Television Viewing Time and Mortality, tracked the viewing habits of 8800 Australian adults over 6 1/2 years.
The study found that every hour watching television can increase the risk of dying earlier by 11 per cent.
